Cirque Musica Holiday Presents Wonderland promises to get you in the holiday spirit with their circus show accompanied by a live orchestra. Last night I attended the show in Ottawa, at TD Place. As a massive fan of Christmas shows, attending circus performances, and going to listen to orchestras Wonderland sounded like the perfect way to get me in the holiday spirit.
Cirque Musica Holiday Presents Wonderland is a family friendly show that tells the story of a woman who opens a book she finds under the Christmas tree called wonderland and is transported into the world of wonderland where she is a princess. Throughout the show, there is a series of circus acts that perform to entertain the princess seated on her throne.
The circus talent was outstanding, with two of the acrobats adding some much-needed humor to the show tripping each other while they do tricks. From above the stage, aerial artists mesmerize the audience with their fantastic talent handing from a hoop or silks from the ceiling. Likewise, the strength and balance of a pair of women and men who were able to defy gravity and balance on each other were fantastic. I was left holding my breath when one man balanced on the head of another man.
Despite all the talented performers, I felt the Christmas theme was a disappointment. The stage was mostly taken up by the orchestra, and there was no festive holiday set decor. Throughout watching the show, I never felt the location of wonderland shined. The set design was a disappointment, as were some of the costumes. For example, I couldn’t tell why the man on roller blades was wearing black fringe black pants, or what his character was.
If you can look past the poor sets and weak storytelling the music and performers were amazing. The show’s talent left me entertained, even if I walked away wishing for more holiday theme and cohesive story.
The show is touring North American until December 23d. Get your tickets for Wonderland online.
