Whenever you travel to a country that doesn’t speak English, it is always useful to learn a bit of the native language. The problem is most of us are busy, which is why I was interested in trying Babbel. Babbel is available on your computer or as an app for your phone so that you can spend a few minutes each day mastering real-life conversation skills and reading comprehension.
Currently, Babbel is available Danish, Geman, English, Indonesian, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish. The lessons are all made to be short, focused on everyday topics you will use when travelling, such as ordering food, booking a hotel room, or getting directions.
Within the lesson on Babbel, you’ll find matching words and photos, filling in the blanks, repeating, and words or sentences.
What Type Of Lessons Can You Try On Babbel?
Once you’ve selected the language, you can pick between a basic refresher, grammar, listening and speaking, reading and writing, countries and traditions and more.
After taking a basic introduction to the language, the most useful lessons for travellers are under “countries and traditions’ Here you can find lessons on a variety of beneficial topics. For example, for French, there is French for your vacation, colloquial speech and slang, food, road signs, sightseeing (by different cities in France).
I couldn’t get over how useful it all was. Under sightseeing, you could pick cities like Paris or Bordeaux and practice French related to famous landmarks. This way, you can easily ask for directions or read the local signs. The food section is perfect for helping you feel comfortable ordering at a restaurant.
If you aren’t sure where to start, Babbel also has a quiz where you can select your motivation for learning a language, and they will suggest a lesson. Some of the options you can pick are for travel, your career, or because you love the food of that country.
