For a while now I’ve been meaning to try to make my own set of gold rimmed glasses but I’ve struggled to find a high quality gold paint that is food and dishwasher safe until now. I bring you my easy DIY gold rimmed glasses that are 100% safe to put in the top rack of your dishwasher. Best of all I love how elegant they look when serving drinks at cocktail parties at my home.
DIY GOLD RIMMED GLASSES
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Facial cotton pads or microfibre cleaning cloth
- Gold food safe paint
- Foam paint brush
- Painter’s tape
I picked up for glasses at the local thrift store for $1 each, and cleaned these glasses first with dish soap and water and once they dried I cleaned the rim of the glass where I would be painting with rubbing alcohol using a facial cotton pad.
Next I wrapped a piece of painter’s tape around each glass directly under the rim.
Next just paint thin coats of gold paint around the rim of the glass. I used a foam paint brush and Martha Stewart multi-surface metallic acrylic craft paint in gold for my glasses as it is dishwasher safe and food safe after the paint has fully adhered to the glass (note this takes 21 days). While the paint is drying for the first day it is still very easy to remove from the glass so if you have an drip marks just take a bit of rubbing alcohol and the cotton swab or pad and wipe away the excess paint.
Here you can see the new glasses which I’ve decided to test out over a glass of Whiskey with friends and the glasses worked perfectly. As you can see despite going through the dishwasher a few times the paint is still perfectly staying on the glass.
