Inspired by crime scene investigation shows* I decided to make some DIY bloody cupcakes and crime scene tape party plates for Halloween using washi tape. *Truth: I hate watching TV shows or movies with tons of blood, so the closest “bloody” thing I might express interest in would be the video game Dragon Age which is known for it’s stylistic blood splatters.
DIY BLOODY CUPCAKES AND HALLOWEEN PLATES
When it comes to Halloween party plates the options are rather limited I found, with most of the options being overly cute Halloween ghosts or pumpkins which wasn’t at all what I was looking for. So when I spotted some Halloween themed washi tape I got to work making some plates by using the tape on the edges of black square paper plates.
Each plate takes less than a minute to make as the process is so simple, so once my stack of 30 plates were done I got to work on decorating my cupcakes which were a vanilla cupcake with vanilla bean icing.
To create the bloody cupcakes I mixed corn syrup and red food coloring together and would use my fork to throw the red mixture onto a cupcake which would be placed on a sheet of wax paper to protect my entire kitchen from becoming a mess. To get dripping blood I would drip the blood off my fork onto the top of the cupcake near the middle and it would pour down. While for the splatter I would flick the fork and it would create droplets. To get a finer mist of blood you could use a clean toothbrush instead to splatter the decorative blood.
Here is the end result of DIY Halloween plates and cupcakes. For you busy folks who decide to do a last minute Halloween party, you can easily use premade white cupcakes and just splatter the blood to make them instantly perfect for Halloween.
Here is my alternative plate this time using skull washi tape around the edge of the black paper plate. For the cupcake I went for something more traditional, so it is an orange cupcake with vanilla bean frosting and black and orange sprinkles. Yum!
