DIY Instagram Photo Frame (Part 2)

DIY Instagram Photo Frames

As I mentioned this summer I started working on a picking 230 photos for a huge Instagram artwork for the living room. Today I’m happy to finally share the project, which was just featured on Canadian Living’s website!

INSTAGRAM PHOTO FRAMES MATERIALS

  • Hardboard – 48 by 96 inches
  • 2 – 1 by 2 by 8
  • 2 – 1 by 2 by 4
  • White acrylic paint
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Paint primer / Gesso
  • ½ inch masking tape
  • 1000 square photo self-adhesive stickers
  • Digital photo archival spray (optional)
  • Fine sandpaper
  • 39 sheets of glossy photo paper (optional)
  • Scissors or exacto knife and ruler
  • Nails and hammer / staple gun
  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil
  • 230 3×3 photos  (template can be found here)

To begin, paint two coats of primer on the hardboard and the four frame pieces using a foam roller to give a smooth finish. Once the primer has dried, paint the hardboard white and the frame pieces black, making sure to sand everything with fine sandpaper in between coats.

Assemble the frame by placing the frame around the outside of the hardboard. Use wood glue around the edge of the hardboard and place the frame on top of the glue, use weights or clamps to hold in position until glue dries. Once the glue has set carefully flip over the hardboard and further secure the frame by using finishing nails or a staple gun.

Create a masking tape grid by carefully spacing all the horizontal and vertical lines every 3 ½ inches by measuring and marking where the tape should go with a pencil.

Next select 230 photos which you will need to resize to 3×3″. This can be easily done using the template and instructions provided in our post here. After stick the photo self-adhesive stickers on the corners of each photograph and glue one photograph per square in the grid starting with the square in the second row and second column.

Here is closeup of the final project with various moments throughout my life. For extra protection from fading, and to help secure the photos further to the frame you can spray a light coat of photo archival spray. DIY Instagram Photo Frames

This looks a great way to display photos. It might be fun to try it for photos from a couple of big trips we made a few years ago.
(Good to find your blog – I’m visiting from the linky party.)
