Craft your own natural DIY slate cheese board using an inexpensive slate tile as the perfect way to serve up cheeses, charcuterie or appetizers. One of the advantages of a slate cheeseboard over regular wooden ones is you can write directly on slate using chalk to label the various foods.
DIY SLATE CHEESE BOARD
- 12×12″ Slate tile from Lowes
- Olive oil or mineral oil
- Non-shedding cloth
- Plastic protective stickers used for furniture
- Dish soap
- Chalk pen or chalk (optional)
To start clean all sides of your slate tile using dish soap to remove any dirt.
Once the tile has dried, wipe the tile using olive oil or mineral oil (used to seal butcher blocks). The oil will help to seal the tile, and give it a slight shine. After using the cheese board it will be necessary to apply more oil each time the tile is cleaned using soap.
Flip the tile over, and at the four corners place a plastic protective sticker which you can find for protecting furniture. I bought mine at the dollar store, but you can also find them at hardware stores.
Once you are done eating clean the slate cheese board with a damp cloth.
