How To Hide Your TV

HOW TO HIDE YOUR TV

See the TV in the living room? That is right I didn’t think so! Curious how Alex and I DIYed a way to hide a huge tv within our living room? Check out our clever DIY, all you need is a TV mount and a curtain panel.

“Here is an amazing 55 inch Smart 3D LED TV Alex, but please don’t let it be viewable most of the time”, is essentially what I said after giving Alex our first TV in over 7+ years. Prior to having this TV we had always watched television shows on our laptop, which was nice despite the limited viewing angle because it was easy to hide. I soon came to realize the TV would end up in the living room which was a problem as I wanted it hidden in our long and narrow space (10’9” x 21’5”), and with our current couch position the TV would have to be hung over the fireplace and I didn’t desire it to be the focal point of the space, nor to have it around 18 feet away from the couch.

After some brainstorming I decided to extend the curtain rod by 60” beside the small window near the fireplace to give the illusion that our window was bigger. Behind the extended curtain we installed a low-profile Loctek full motion wall mount to hang the TV as it allowed us to keep the TV flush against the wall, and to extend the TV, the fireplace area, or the kitchen.

We also changed the electrical plug to a clock plug, which is a recessed plug which got the TV closer to the wall, so that now if it is hidden behind the curtain the TV sits less than one inch away from the wall.

Now when people visit our home for the first time they often remark about the lack of a TV in our home, which typically is the cue for Alex to move the curtains and reveal our hidden TV.

That’s a fantastic idea and it turned out lovely! I love the illusion of bigger windows and that you were able to hide the TV like that. Stopping by from Not Just a Housewife.

I’m a big fan of the fireplace too, especially after last winter which was my first time having my own fireplace.

Thanks! We’re really happy with the final outcome – everyone is always blown away the first time they see it. A great use of space for sure.

Thanks! The wall mount was a bit pricey, but well worth it in the end I think.
