Sputnik & Urchin Chandeliers

“Satellite in my eyes, like a diamond in the sky, how I wonder.” – Satellite by Dave Matthews Band

Inspired by the Olympics happening in Sochi, Russia I decided to highlight a housing trend that has a Russian origin, the Sputnik chandelier. The iconic space age starburst light fixture introduced in the 1960s was based upon the design of the Sputnik satellite launched by Russia in 1957.  Various forms of the Sputnik chandelier exist today but two popular ones are the original sputnik chandelier that has metallic rods with lights at the end, and the urchin chandelier that has the lights within the middle.

In particular the urchin shape is a trending accent, with the form appearing in sculptural table or wall accents and in lighting. Can you picture this mod/mid-century space themed light in your home?

Pretty! Wow, and what a difference in price in your Splurge & Steal comparison, for basically the same things…

The biggest difference would be the top two lights, simply as the first one has 12 light bulbs and the second one only has 3. Otherwise they are VERY similar.

I adore this kind of lights – they remind me of the chandeliers at the Met in NYC!

Plus, our home is a fun mix of traditional and modern pieces, so these really would be perfect!

Oh right, I had forgotten about them but you are right, the crystal sputnik chandelier at the MET Opera in NYC is breathtaking.
