If you are looking for the next big pop up dining experience in Ottawa – Welcome to Soirée is it! Dining under glass domes has become a trendy dining experience, with popups occurring around the world including London, New York, Chicago, and Sydney. Next spring, Desjardins is sponsoring Ottawa’s first dome pop up, where you will be able to dine in the private garden dome along the Rideau Canal.
Welcome to Soirée is the chance for you and your closest friends to share a unique dining experience under the stars with a prime view of downtown Ottawa. Within your weather protective garden domes that fit up to 5 people, you will be able to savour an elegant 4-course meal paired with wine and champagne.
Taking place at Terrace on the Canal starting on Sunday, April 29th, 2018, Welcome to Soirée will only run for 30 days. Limited dinner seatings for 10 domes will be available at 5 pm, 7 pm, and 9 pm daily. Tickets for the event go on sale on Friday, February 17th at 11 am.
Recently, I had the pleasure to interview Marcel Williams the business manager of Hosted by Dinner4Four Co. (who is responsible for organizing the event), to find a bit more about the Welcome to Soirée.
What can be expected when attending this event?
For dinner, you will be guided to your dome, which can comfortably seat 4 to 5 people, and you will be treated to a luxurious 4-course dinner. After your dinner, you are welcome to relax at the patio bar and enjoy the view.
Welcome to Soiree is an outdoor dining experience that is described said to be an art and garden dinner popup. Could you elaborate on what the art and garden feature will entail?
Terrace on the Canal will be transformed into a lush garden by florist Wild Roots Floral and Garden & Ryan Wibawa. Spring will arrive early to Ottawa, as hanging plants and colourful flowers will bloom around the garden domes transform the area into a stunning lush garden.
What was your inspiration for the event?
The inspiration for the event came from the Coppa Club where igloo style glass domes were installed along the Thames offering a luxurious place to dine. These garden domes were perfect for London as they protected from the wind and rain encouraging people to go outdoors.
Applying the same concept here in Ottawa, once winter is over, you will have the chance to dine in a private garden structure that will protect you from the wind or rain and provide you with a reason to go outdoors and enjoy some premium food.
Pop up dining experiences have been popular in Ottawa for the past few years, event likes the Sky Lounge, Dîner En Blanc, Picnic On The Bridge, and Canada’s Table have all quickly sold out. Why do you believe there is such a demand for these types of dining experiences?
Ottawa is a foodie city that loves to share what they are doing on social media. As such, when you can pair an experience that is aesthetically pleasing and the chance to mingle over good food they become popular in as everyone wants to share what they are eating.
When do tickets for the event become available and how much will they cost? What is included in the fee?
It will be a shared cost of $55 to reserve your garden dome for your entire group if you use the discount code provided from subscribing to the event’s email list (otherwise the fee to reserve is $110 without the discount code). You will need a minimum of 4 guests to complete your reservation, but you can invite an invite up to 5 people in total. Subscribers will be given the first opportunity to pick a timeslot for their dinner, so it is important to sign up for the mailing list as there are only 10 domes per timeslot. After reserving your dome you will be able to pre-order your food (options will include vegetarian, white meat or red meat) along with bottles of wine, champagne or beer.
Dinner is $88.35 per person for the blind menu designed by Chef Michael Blackie (NEXT Restaurant). For the blind menu, you will have the option to select either the plat de viandes (meat), fruits de mar inspire (seafood), or végétalien sain (vegan) option. The entire dining experience will be nut-free.
Do you have any plans to host Welcome to Soiree in other cities across Canada?
Ottawa will be the first city Welcome To Soiree takes place in Canada, with the event taking place in Montreal, Winnipeg, and Quebec City in the spring of 2019 and Toronto in spring 2020.
